Sign-ups for the Veganuary campaign hit record highs in 2020, with over 400,000 people making the pledge to “go vegan” (nearly doubling the 2019 sign up). Learn more about this rising trend and how ADM’s Vegan Farmhouse Cake Mix* offers your business the opportunity to tap into it.
With vegans and vegetarians looking set to make up a quarter of the British population in 2025, and flexitarians just under half of all UK consumers, UK vegan new product development (NPD) is flourishing, so much so that according to Mintel, in 2019, nearly one in four products launched in the UK carried a vegan claim. Compared to one in six in 2018. And so far in 2020 (months January to November), 16% of ready meals in the UK were plant-based, rising from just 3% in 2018.
So what does this mean for veganism within the bakery sector? The continued growth of vegan claims within the bread category echoes the media buzz around the topic and the wider ‘flexitarian’ trend. – In bread, the UK is the country leading on vegan claims, with a digital share of shelf of 24% in 2019. This is followed by Ireland (20.5%) and Germany (9%).
Although, baked goods is another area to keep in the spotlight and where innovation is set to come. Fully plant-based baked goods (without milk, eggs or butter) is a category with just a few players so far.
The innovative Vegan Farmhouse Cake Mix* from ADM has been formulated with the busy baker in mind, who requires a high quality vegan pre-mix to which they can add additional ingredients – just water, plus (optional) spices and/or fruit – to produce a diverse product range; including, muffins, loaf cakes, sheets and carrot cake.
