With vegans and vegetarians looking set to make up a quarter of the British population in 2025, and flexitarians just under half of all UK consumers, UK vegan new product development (NPD) is flourishing, so much so that according to Mintel, in 2019, nearly one in four products launched in the UK carried a vegan claim. Compared to one in six in 2018. And so far in 2020 (months January to November), 16% of ready meals in the UK were plant-based, rising from just 3% in 2018.
So what does this mean for veganism within the bakery sector? The continued growth of vegan claims within the bread category echoes the media buzz around the topic and the wider ‘flexitarian’ trend. – In bread, the UK is the country leading on vegan claims, with a digital share of shelf of 24% in 2019. This is followed by Ireland (20.5%) and Germany (9%).
